Back to the natural cleaning discussion again
I'm still working on this. As you can imagine, we do a LOT of cleaning here, we need to keep surfaces spotlessly clean and oil free, the whole workshop basically has to be what we call Hospital Clean (well, actually, better than that, but you know what I'm driving at here...) and it has to be completely scrubbed down every day for obvious reasons, which means what ever we use has to be effective, but also safe as we use such a lot of it. So, I've tried the borax cleaner on the floor that was suggested to me, and it works a treat, but doesn't leave the clean smell I like without a fair sprinkling of essential oil (a touch pricey, even for us). So I'm exploring every natural alternative now, I'll test them in the workshop and let you know how I get on. My natural cleaning book is on my Christmas present list still, so any suggestions you have will be gratefully, as always, received.

Prevention better than cure
I think this comment fits in here. I had a new bathroom installed about three years ago and on the outside wall of the bathroom a layer of plasterboard which contained an insulating layer of polystyrene was put onto the wall before it was tiled. This area covered the part of my shower cubicle that includes the outside wall. Well, after all this time I noticed a small amount of mould growth today and only a little spec at that - not bad for three years. I have never used bleach in the shower cubicle - only cream cleaner. So this is a good preventative measure rather than having to use bleach to clean the tiles. I know this is something that you can only do if you are having a new bathroom installed but it is definately worth thinking about for the future and isn't very expensive to do in the context of the complete job. P.S. I'm not using bleach down the loo any more - a quick scrub with Ecover cream cleaner with the toilet brush, flush, followed by Ecover toilet cleaner - leave for five mins - flush - clean toilet! I've still got half a bottle of bleach but I just can't bring myself to dispose of it. So I'm essentially a bleach-free person and all because of your blog! I've been converted!!!I'm now looking for some other nasty that I can eliminate - but to be honest I don't think there are many left. Well, I do like to spray my kitchen worktops with dettol every night. Any suggestions for a good anti-bacterial alternative?

Oh wow!

Bleach free - well done you!  And I'll mention that building alternative when it comes to us having a new one fitted; that's a really interesting point, there must be more structural ways of avoiding damp, even in this mizzly Cornish climate, and thereby keeping ourselves away from chemicals to combat it.  Thanks for that.

As for your anti-bac query, I don't know if Dettol contains triclosan as I don't use it myself, but check the label, it's one of the ones that scares me witless to be honest.  I'm not in the habit of using anti-bacterial things in my kitchen, I use a lot of lemon to clean with instead, it's great on sinks and on the inside of the fridge, keeps it smelling fresh and sparkly clean.  I boil the cloths I use in the kitchen, so they stay very clean and bright white.  And if I really feel like doing a deep clean, I'll use about 10 drops of teatree oil in a garden mister about a quarter full of some boiled but cool water.

I'd guess that with your job you probably have a very unique attitude to antibacterial agents do you? If I were dealing with ecoli on a regular basis, I guess I might too :)

Natural Cleaning
This is one of my most hated past-times so anything to make it easier!! For the shop floor I use Bio-D's multi-surface cleaner, has a lovely orange aroma and lasts for ages as I only use one squirt for a whole bucketful of water. Again, I use water as hot as I can stand (through rubber gloves) and the same cleaner or Bio-D washing up liquid (which is scent-free) for surfaces, both in the shop AND at home.....have done so for nearly 3 years now, and (touching wood) no one has come down with anything nasty!!! But by far and away my greatest investment is my hand-held steam cleaner (have I told you about my hand-held steam cleaner?). It's fab. Bought it from The Healthy House around 2 1/2 years ago. It sends out a jet of steam so sanitizes everything you use it on.....so I use it on toilet seats (eww) and anywhere I would once have used bleach, great for getting the grubby rings rounds taps clean....I could go on and on. The Healthy House don't stock them any more, but I know they are available elsewhere Hope that helps. Nicola x

Thanks Helen
I like that one too, but there's actually quite a few smaller companies out there doing so great stuff too. I've contacted a few so will keep this item posted with our results.
