Essential Oils

We have now added essential oils to the site, under the DIY section.  I've tried to give a bit of background on the oil on each page and then suggest a few uses for it but in the interests of finishing the job before I hit 60, I had to keep it brief.

What we'd really like to do though is have a nice comprehensive list of uses under each oil, so can you please email me or reply to this thread with the ways you use EOs at home and I'll post them please?  Many thanks :)

Tea tree oil
I fill a handbag atomiser spray with water (usually hold about 25-30ml) and 20 drops of tea tree oil - roughly 10% - and use it as a hand sanitiser. Better than the gloopy gels they sell in shops! Also, raving on about tea tree oil, it was the only thing that worked on a bad case of folliculitis after shaving last year, use it neat, like for spots and also add 10 drops to a hand full of body lotion to keep it at bay. 15 drops of Geranium, added to a warm bath is great for PMT!

Oils
I use Lavender neat on spots...any diluted oil I fancy as a perfume...Tea tree and Lavender in my bathroom cleaner (antibacterial/anti mould)...orange and lemon in my kitchen cleaner (antibacterial/degreasing). I think that other oils like sage eucalyptus etc have antibacterial properties too...might have to check my green cleaning book and get back to you on that one!

Tea Tree and Lavender
I find that some aloe vera gel with tea tree and lavender EOs makes for a very good spot zapper and it helps with scarring too (I use 2 drops per 10ml dilution). Also, a couple of drops of tea tree in a basin of hot water is great for steaming oily skin before giving the face a gentle brush with your soft facial brush and then applying your seaweed face mask. Pampering PNS style!

EOs
In the winter, we tend to have the heating on later in the evening so some nights if I need to relax a bit before bed, I put a few drops of Lavender on my radiator in my room about 10mins before I go to bed, shut the door. Then when I come to bed my room is all tranquil smelling! I don't recomend putting it on tissue on your pillow or anything because it can be too strong then it ends up keeping me awake!

oh, and also....
... I had a painful ulcer in my mouth once so I gargled a few drops of Teatree in water. Cleared it up in no time and I had tried everything else. You just have to be carefull not to swallow it!

I'm a complete novice...
...to using EOs, so all of these suggestions are great! I like the idea of using them as air fresheners. A bit disappointed that you are not selling vanilla EO. Also, I like your ylang ylang and lime combination and there's no ylang ylang;-( Do you intend to sell these? Will be happy to test your new rollerball fragrances - so will send you my address. Roll out the rollerballs!!

My fault entirely, we do have ylang ylang eo in stock
It will be on the site in a few minutes - sorry! I'll get some vanilla in for you too. Using EOs as air fresheners is just wonderful - and easy, you're not exposing yourself to a cocktail of nasties (blasted at you every 30 minutes, those things are just evil!) and you can make your own scent up too.

air fresheners...mingin!
I'm sooo glad someone else also agrees that those things that puff out fragrance every now and then, aren't good. They stick to the back of my throat and they smell way too sickly. I can't believe how many people think they're "quite nice", quite frankly, I think they are "quite mingin"!

Agree entirely...
I was at the theatre a few weeks ago and whilst waiting to go into the auditorium I kept getting a whiff of a very over-powering smell which seemed to come and go in cycles. I then realised that I was stood near one of those awful things that squirt out whatever noxious chemicals the manufacturer has put in them. I agree entirely - the smell is 'mingin'. P.S. Thanks for putting the ylang ylang EO in the DIY section, Emily.

I posted a reply to this yesterday but it's not here for some reason

I'll have to investigate that, but in the meantime, type "Air Freshener Dangers" into Google, have a read and then tell me these things are safe.  They make me feel ill so they do, avoid them at all costs I say.

Essential oils
Hello all, Try adding baking soda and essential oil to the conditioner drawer of your washing machine instead of branded ones - just lovely and when you have 4 or 5 different oils you can change the fragrance each time you do a wash. Save yourself a fortune and at the same time the baking soda is keeping your washing machine pipes free from gunge.

Hi there Jill and thanks for a top tip

This is a great tip, it doesn't cost a fortune and it's very effective indeed, one well worth trying if you haven't already.

I really like this sharing ideas thing that's going on here, I'm going to try and figure out a new way to publish them all more clearly.  Thanks and keep them coming everyone!

Few other uses...
If you have an open fire then you can add a couple of drops of either sandlewood or cedarwood before putting them on the fire. A couple of drops of your fav eo added to a small piece of fabric and placed in the tumble drier (not v eco though!) with your clothes makes your clothes smell lovely. Add chamomile and lavender eo to water to make a safe baby wipe solution to use with washable wipes. Add lavender to the inside of the cardboard ring on a toilet roll before putting in the holder. Everytime you use it the fragrance will be released. Add 1 or 2 drops of your fav oil to light bulbs (in lamps) as the oil heats up it will make the room smell nice.

All very good suggestions, thanks Emsie
I'm going to have to figure out a way of adding all these to the DIY section somehow - or perhaps just a Home Tips bit on the new Recipes section might be the best way to go here, either way, thanks very much for the ideas.  Once you start using EOs at home it just snowballs doesn't it?
